PROBE 2009-2012
STAGE TWO
(recently concluded during the 4th Festival of science and SUTRA segment - Gallery of the National Bank of Serbia:
http://www.festivalnauke.org/sutra/works/002.html; December 3, 4 and 5, 2010): Checkpoint equipped with X-ray contraband scanner was placed on the gallery entrance. Gallery visitors had opportunity to become subjects of security screening. Images generated this way with visitors’ consent were immediately printed and displayed in the space. Visitors had the option to remove their prints and take them home upon leaving the gallery. Visitors’ experience of anxiety and passivity of victimized object of observation, is transformed into uniquely creative activity, voyeuristic feast for the eyes on the gallery walls.
The project “Probe” is commentary on the issue of personal freedom and how it is abused today worldwide in the name of “war on terror”– The project raises questions whether taking away citizens’ rights to privacy is a legitimate tool in this fight; do we lose more than we gain by giving up so much?
This project also refers to the issue of identity: true, assumed, hidden, etc. The image of distorted identity generated in media: TV reality shows, beauty magazines, and in popular visual culture, terrorizes us with unrealistic aesthetic and cultural norms, expectations, and illusions.
The heroic images of this exhibition are our own body and concealed belongings, now revealed. Strangely enough, people are more accepting of their own image if it is “gentrified” through the art process, elevated from its natural existence and immortalized as a work of art. This show is offering the redemption of the ordinary human existence, celebrating its honesty and uniqueness.
Probe is envisioned as 3 stages project:
STAGE ONE
(recently concluded - Atelier Dado: http://www.mnmuseum.org/Dado_E.htm and O3ONE: http://www.o3one.rs/eng/?p=900): Live video stream from the X-ray baggage scanners from the international airport was streamed to the gallery space for the exhibition reception. For one day and for 30 minutes only visitors in the galleries (several galleries were involved as well as online viewers) were able to peek into the privacy of random passengers, without knowing anything about their true identity. Rather, they have had the opportunity to imagine persons and personalities based solely on their luggage content. On the remaining gallery walls selected images of the passengers’ belongings were executed as digital prints on polycarbonate 3D Illusion film. Gallery floor had crowd control barriers deployed in attempt to control crowd flow and to restrict and direct their movement.
STAGE THREE
(currently in planning): Similarly to the stage two, gallery entrance will be equipped with the body scanner (nowadays installed on mayor airports). Images of visitors’ bodies will be at core of this interactive exhibition.
